Bach :

Johann Sebastian Bach, German Baroque Composer, (1685-1750)
Acclaimed only long after his death, Bach mastered many musical talents: singer,
violinist, organist, harpsichordist, and composer. His musical style is based on
northern German contrapuntal with a majority of his later work having influence
from an Italian styling. Bach’s appointments include organist at the ducal court
at Weimar, kapellmeister at the princely court of Kothen and cantor at St.
Thomas in Leipzig. He is the inventor of the harpsichord concerto genre and
holds the title as the greatest composer of the Baroque era.

Ludwig van Beethoven, German Classical and Romantic Composer
(1770-1827)
Beethoven was known as one of the most gifted pianists and violists of all time.
His music expresses a humanistic sense derived from an era of revolution.
Influenced heavily by Haydn and Mozart, his sound became all its own with the
addition of his intense energy. This style was best announced in his Third
Symphony, which to many marks the beginning of the Romantic Era. In spite of
becoming deaf later in life, he is famous for shaping the scope of instrumental
music and raising it to the highest plane of art.

Grieg:
Performed by one of the world’s finest orchestras, the London
Philharmonic Edvard Grieg, Norwegian Composer (1843-1907)
Grieg attended Leipzig in his musical studies as well as Copenhagen,
creating a personal inspiration for Norwegian national music. Grieg and
his wife had a special relationship and would often perform recitals of
his music together. Grieg’s best-known works include “Peer Gynt” and the
majority of his piano concertos. Unlike many composers, Grieg became
very popular during his lifetime and is still considered Norway’s
greatest composer.

Handel:
Performed by one of the world’s finest orchestras, the London Symphony
George Frideric Handel, German-born British Composer
(1685-1759)
Handel was a gifted musician educated in the organ, violin, and
composition. After producing his first opera at age 20, he moved to
Florence and continued to write operas, along with oratories and
cantatas. His name came to fame in London by way of his opera Rinaldo.
This fame helped Handel become the director of the Royal Academy of
Music until a shift in musical trends. Handel’s greatest accomplishment
was the first public oratorio performance in England, eventually making
oratorio the most popular musical form across England.

Mendelssohn :

1809-1847)
Mendelssohn showed his strong musical talent at an early age. He began
composing at 11 and wrote his first masterpiece by 16. Mendelssohn’s
styling was based on Classical models but was also influenced by
Romanticism, which lifted his work above the traditional. After holding
the position music director of Dusseldorf, Mendelssohn accepted a
similar Leipzig. Here he used his talent bring the Gewandhaus Orchestra
such heights that Leipzig became musical capital of Germany.

Mozart :

the London Philharmonic. Wolfgang Amadeus, Austrian Composer (1756-1791)
Mozart is the most well known composer of modern times. A prodigy of his
father Leopold, Mozart composed his first public performance at the age
of five. While touring France, England, and Italy with his father,
Mozart was introduced to many forms of musical composition, giving him
the base of his musical styles. Mozart’s peak of performance is thought
to be his string quartets dedicated to Haydn, the great operas “The
Marriage of Figaro,” “Don Giovanni,” and “Cosi fan tutte,” and his later
symphonies.

Schubert
:

Franz Schubert, Austrian Composer, (1797-1828)
Schubert was originally trained as a schoolteacher at his family’s
request. After joining what today is known as the Vienna Boys Choir, his
talents surfaced in such a way that Antonio Salleri offered to train him
personally. With pressure from his family, Schubert became an educator
at his father’s school, until he broke away to become an independent
tutor. During this time, Schubert wrote some of his best known music,
including the three-act opera “Alfonso und Estrella.” Schubert’s
greatness was cut short due to a disease that took his life at 31. In
spite of this, he produced more masterpieces in his lifetime than almost
any composer in history.

Tchaikovsky :

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky., Russian Composer (1840-1893)
Tchaikovsky became a serious composer in his mid teens, before
continuing his study at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. After Piano
Concerto No.1 was played in Boston, Tchaikovsky became widely popular,
producing commissions on a regular basis. Although he led a
controversial personal life, his work continued to show greatness, as
seen in the works of “The Queen of Spades” and the ballet “The
Nutcracker.” Known for his harmonies and picturesque orchestration,
Tchaikovsky transformed the ballet genre into the grandly-staged
musicals of today.
